Shanan Zickefoose began her career in permanent makeup (PMU) in 2006. She took over 300 hours of training—an uncommon accomplishment at the time but required by Oklahoma licensing. She joined the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP) in 2007, drawn to their high standards and mission.

In 2010, Shanan became the first person in Oklahoma to earn the Certified Permanent Cosmetic Professional (CPCP) credential. She also achieved the highest exam score that year.

Dedicated to Growing the Industry

From 2011 to 2013, Shanan served on the SPCP Board of Directors as Secretary and Communications Chair. Later, she became an SPCP Trainer Member and Subject Matter Expert (SME). In 2017, she was asked to lead the SPCP’s Train the Trainer program. This helps other professionals become PMU trainers. She continues to teach this program at SPCP events and online, updating it regularly to benefit trainers worldwide.

A Passion for Healing and Safety

Shanan earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Tulsa. Her interest in wound care and infection control deepened after a personal experience. Her daughter Madison battled cancer, then a severe flesh-eating bacterial infection. These experiences inspired her to develop safer practices in PMU and tattooing.

In 2018, she authored the Principles of Infection Control for the Tattoo Industry. It guides tattoo and PMU professionals in improving safety and hygiene.

Recognition and Global Impact

Shanan’s contributions to the PMU industry have earned her many honors. In 2019, she received the SPCP’s Industry Ambassador Award for her leadership in training and infection control.

The American Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) annual meeting in 2023, educating regulators and body art professionals on safety.

The Japanese Medical Tattoo Association (JMTA) conference in 2024, where she served as the Keynote Speaker in Nagoya, Japan.
